What is Medicare Advantage?

It’s not unusual for the same coverage under Medicare to go by two different names. That’s the case with Medicare Advantage. If you haven’t heard of that term, then you probably know it as Medicare Part C.

Regardless of what you call it, Medicare Advantage is offered through private insurers. It provides you with Medicare Parts A and B, along with additional coverage to fill in the gaps. It’s like a one-policy-covers-everything plan. Medicare Advantage plans also can include a variety of additional benefits, such as vision and dental. It even has maximum limits for your out-of-pocket costs.

What may sound familiar to you when talking about Medicare Advantage is that the plans tend to be either PPOs or HMOs. Many employer-based plans offer these same choices so it could be similar to health plans you have used in the past.

You either choose to have a Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare Parts A and B. You can’t have both.
